Sketching lesson 4 - Let there be light - and dark!

Top Art Tip - make a tonescale using a B or 2B pencil to show you all the shades of grey through to black which you can achieve. Leave white paper for the lightest tone.

Keep this tonescale to help you judge the lightness or darkness of the things you are drawing,  whether you are working from a photo or a still life, landscape or figure.

Top Art Tip - Tone means the lightness or darkness of your marks and is the most important thing in a good punchy drawing or painting - tone is even more important than colour, and still important when you are working in colour.

Top Art Tip - A shaded area is in shadow or is a hollow; a lit area is in direct light or is a bump. Very important when drawing faces!

Top Art Tip - There are no black lines around things in reality, so keep the black for shadows, hollows, and leave white paper for the highest highlights - as you see above.

  1. Really appreciate your helpful work, Jan! And love your own pictures. BTW, Steve (who's also an artist) says it's great too.
